Pre-Teen Serve Areas

I am Here to Serve – I Peter 4:10

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

Expectations of a Serve Team Member:

- Serve as Jesus taught us to serve – putting the needs of others above our own wishes or desires

- If you are serving in the classroom you are there as a helper to the kids, not a participant in the activities created for the kids

- Wear your shirt when you are assigned to serve

- Check in, wear your name tag

- Be in your assigned class/location no later than 15 minutes before church is scheduled to begin (by 8:45 or 10:15 a.m.)

- Introduce yourself to the teachers/leaders and let them know you are there to do anything they need you to do, ask how you can help that day

- Be polite to everyone, respectful of those leading, and willing to help in any manner asked of you

- If you cannot serve on your assigned Sunday/service time, it is your responsibility to trade with another person in your service area then contact Karen Sherbahn, karens@fcog.church to let her know who you traded with

- As you serve you will build relationships with the kids you are serving

Serving as Worship Music Team member means you are helping direct younger children towards preparing their hearts to sing and worship through music. You are modeling what worshipping God through singing looks like.

Serving as a Worship Music Team member means you are helping direct younger children towards preparing their hearts to sing and worship through music. You are modeling what worshipping God through singing looks like.

Obviously having a love of singing is a big part of this ministry!

As a Children’s Worship Music Team member, you will be:

- Joyfully and enthusiastically singing and participating in the music

- If there are motions to the songs, you will be doing the motions

- You will follow the instructions of the adult on the platform. This might mean you lead part of the group; it may mean you are listening as they explain the song; it may mean you are showing the kids the motions. You are serving as you listen to leaders, then lead others

- You may need to come early or have extra practice each month to prepare new songs

- You will be asked to listen to the songs at home, so you are familiar with the songs before you lead others

- Exhibit an attitude of worship throughout the morning

- When the music portion of the Elementary Worship time is over you may quietly join your class

- Arrive at least 15 minutes before service begins and check in with the morning Worship Leader

- Wear your shirt

Serving as a Greeter lets you be the first SMILING face someone sees when they arrive on a Sunday morning!

Serving as a Greeter lets you be the first SMILING face someone sees when they arrive on a Sunday morning!

As a greeter your location is the second set of glass doors in the Children’s lobby. It is very important you are EARLY since you are welcoming people as they arrive.

If you see a family coming in with several children, or their hands are full and their children need help – ask if you can help them. Maybe you could entertain a young child while the parents check them in; or help take their coats off while mom or dad are helping other children. If a mom comes in alone with 2 or 3 children ask if you might wait with the children while she parks the car, or help walk children to class.

If a new family comes in, direct them to the Welcome Desk and tell the adults at the Welcome Desk that we have new friends who need help checking in today. If there is no Hospitality person assigned for the service, feel free to help with their duties that day.

Be able to answer questions a parent may ask such as: Where a certain age-group is meeting that service? Where to locate a bathroom, or a specific leader?

About 15 minutes after service begins, you may go to your class for the remainder of the morning. Be quiet and do not disrupt the class that has already begun.

Serving as a Hospitality Assistant means you treat others as you would want to be treated. You are key to helping new friends become old friends!

Serving as a Hospitality Assistant means you treat others as you would want to be treated. You are key to helping new friends become old friends!

The role of a Hospitality Assistant is to welcome guests and visitors who are attending for the first time. Coming to a new church can be scary, and a bit overwhelming because our church is large and children do not know where they will go, who their teacher will be, what children may be in their classroom, and where their parents will be. Parents are worried about these same things!

You are the calming, welcoming person who lets new friends know how much they will love being here, how great the teachers are, and how much you love coming here to church!

You will need to know where the classes meet for each age group – Nursery through 5th grade, because you will walk guests to each of their classrooms, and let parents know where they can pick up their child.

You will give the parents a Drop-Off and Pick-Up card.

If there is a change in the morning schedule, you will need to inform our guests of the change.

You make certain each new friend receives a Welcome Bag from the Welcome Desk. If we are running low, it is your responsibility to refill the basket or leave a note in the Children’s Office when we are running low on bags.

Ask each child their name, where they attend school, and then introduce them to their teacher when you take them to class. Speak clearly, and slowly.

Let parents know that when they pick up their child they will need to show the label with their child’s name on it to the teacher, and the teacher will take the label and the one their child is wearing – matching name and number. Let parents know that no one else may take their child unless they show the label.

If there is something special coming up, feel free to tell the guests about it – Summer Blast; Sunday PM, etc. and invite them to attend.

You may go to your class about 15 minutes after service begins, once everyone has checked in.

Serving with Preschoolers is full of the “unexpected.”

Serving with Preschoolers is full of the “unexpected.”

Preschoolers are very curious and will probably want to know your name – tell them and ask their name. They may want to show you things in the classroom, or tell you about themselves, their families or what they are currently doing in the room – your role is to engage with the child through listening, playing and being present with them. If a child seems to be alone, sit next to them, ask them their favorite flavor of ice cream, or what they like to eat for breakfast, or if they have any pets. If they do not talk to you – tell them what your favorite ice cream, breakfast, or about your pets.

Preschoolers LOVE older kids and will want to be close to you. They may want to sit in your lap – tell them they can sit beside you, but not on you.

Crying often happens with preschoolers – this may be because they do not want to leave dad or mom; they do not know the teacher; they do not feel well; they are tired – any number of reasons

What do I do when a child is crying?

- Take a cue from the teacher. If the teacher would like you to help they will ask you to come over, and will give you some direction as to next steps. These could be bringing a book and reading to the child; holding the child’s hand and walking around the room; sitting and playing with them, or coloring.

- Stay with the child unless the teacher says otherwise. Children need to remain in the classroom at all times.

Hitting or biting can be a response of frustration by preschoolers - it is not acceptable for a child to hurt another child whether they hit, bite, pull hair, or kick.

What do I do if a child is hurting another child?

- If you see this happening between 2 children, immediately ask them to stop, step between them, and call for the teacher or assistant teacher.

- Explain to the teacher what you observed, then step back and let the teacher take it from there.

Tech Assistant - Click arrow on the right for more info

Serving as a tech assistant means you are inconspicuous as possible!

Serving as a Tech Assistant means you are as inconspicuous as possible! No one looks at the tech if everything is working correctly . During the 9am or 10:30am hour, tech assistants may serve in Children’s Worship or Preteen Worship Room Sound Booth by helping with media, sound, or lights to enhance the worship experience of others.

The role of a Tech Assistant is:

- Have the microphones/body packs ready for leaders by making certain batteries are working

- Look at the morning Worship order noting anything that is highlighted; this means you are responsible to make this happen

- Compare the highlighted items on the list to what shows on the screen. If something is missing, speak with the adult in the tech booth and relay any information to the leader of the Worship hour

- Keep the tech area tidy

- Make certain microphones are put away after the 10:30am hour and all equipment is turned off

You are gifted with the ability to be attentive; sit quietly and patiently; follow instructions easily and promptly; be a problem-solver.
